It may be cold and dark outside, but that doesn’t stop our nation’s capital from making the most of it at Winterlude! With hundreds of thousands of visitors attending each year, this annual winter event is one of the most popular in Canada. It takes place during the first three weekends in February with attractions and events happening all throughout the city. Here is a glimpse of what you can expect.
When and Where Is It Taking Place?
Every year, Winterlude is held during the first three weekends of February. Officially, it kicks off on January 31st with the final day wrapping up on February 17th, 2020. Winterlude related activities will be taking place across numerous locations in Ottawa, so you’ll have to keep an eye on their calendar of events. But the official site is along Sparks Street.
What to Expect
International Ice Carving Contest
One-stop that is a must during Winterlude is the Crystal Garden of the Confederation Park. Here, you’ll find one of the most popular events – the International Ice Carving Contest. You can see some of the world’s most talented carvers turn blocks of ice into masterpieces. After that, you can head across to the ice lounge for a beverage, or the Rink of Dreams to enjoy skating shows, DJs, interactive art displays, and much more. If you plan to go on the weekend, you can browse through the artisan market or get some ice dancing lessons.
Skate Along the Rideau Canal
Of course, you can’t miss out on skating along the Rideau Canal. This is the largest naturally frozen skating rink in the world. You can rent skates, enjoy the activities happening nearby, and warm up with some hot chocolate afterward.
Snowflake Kingdom
If you have kids, make sure to head across to Gatineau to experience the giant winter playground at Jacques-Cartier Park. Snowflake Kingdom transforms the area with big slides, snow sculptures, shows, mascots and plenty of other fun activities that they’ll love.
Byward Market
The Byward Market is always a popular spot to visit any time of year. But during this festival, it’s a bustling hive of activity. You can browse through the different shops and vendors, enjoy mouth-watering cuisine, try a beavertail or warm up with a drink or two in one of the many bars and pubs in the area.
