If you’re a coffee connoisseur, there’s a new java capital to add to your list! Montreal has become a coffee mecca over the years as a slew of new roasters, importers, and independent coffee shops have started sprouting up all across the city. This “third-wave” of coffee makers offer fair-trade, sustainably harvested and organic beans to locals – and they love it! Here’s your 2019 Montreal coffee crawl guide:
Saint-Henri Micro-Torréfacteur
As a farm to café roaster, Saint-Henri’s serves up some of the most ethically sourced coffee in the area. Here you can enjoy sustainably harvested, organic beans that are roasted right in the house. Every year they search for the highest quality beans and bring it right to the shop so you can enjoy the world’s best cup of joe every day. Their Montreal location also includes a mini-laboratory that offers training sessions so that you can learn how to make the best cup of coffee possible. Love their beans? You can order them right online! They’ll even deliver to your office or right to your front door. Check out all their subscriptions here.
Tommy
If you’re looking for a stunning spot to meet over coffee or get a little work done, pay a visit to Tommy. Tommy Café + Apero is a coffee shop in a bar that offers two stunning café locations in Old Town. Their Notre Dame location lets you enjoy sipping on your cup while lounging on mid-century furniture while taking in the old Victorian architecture. Their rue St-Paul spot features hanging ivy, warm wooden accents and a mixture of modern and vintage décor. They also serve up an eclectic menu of breakfast items, healthy sandwiches, salads, and of course delectable desserts and sweet treats. Stay for cinq à sept and enjoy a wine or aperitif during their happy hour.
Café Falco
This industrial style building is a coffee drinker’s dream. Lofty features, high ceilings, decorative pieces, bikes hanging from the ceilings, lots of light – it’s the perfect place to hang out on a lazy Sunday afternoon. They offer siphon coffee, a process that dates back to the 1800s that uses filtering to prevent altering the taste when boiling. It’s worth the visit just to see how it’s done. You can also enjoy a tasty Japanese menu.
Caffe in Gamba
If you’re on the hunt for a more Italian vibe, Caffe in Gamba fits the bill. Red walls, cozy velvet couches, and a wonderful selection of sweet treats, biscotti, pizza and paninis are offered here. You can enjoy classic espresso making from one of the first third wave coffee shops in Montreal. Featuring 25 coffees from 7 artisan roasters, baristas will prepare yours tipped with latte art that you can enjoy outside on their quaint front patio.
Café Dispatch
Big on small scale farming, this Montreal gem offers high-quality coffee beans in house and delivered right to your doorstep. Located in Mile-Ex, they use light roasting to ensure there’s never any bitterness in your cuppa joe. Starting as a FB page delivering cold brew by bicycle and then from a mobile coffee truck, this brand has since turned into one of the most respected places for coffee in Montreal. You can also find them at McGill and at their recent location on Boulevard St-Laurent.
