Moving can be a tough time. We tend to underestimate the amount of patience, labour, and cost involved in getting settled into a new space. Focus your attention on nestling into your new home with these 10 sanity-saving moving hacks!
1. Use colour coded tape
Create less work for yourself post relocation by exercising a simple colour coded system to find your most important stuff first. This system works even better if your colour code by room.
2. Pack a first night kit
After an exhausting day, the last thing you’ll want to do is try and dig through your belongings to find everything you need to get a good night’s sleep. Put a survival kit together ahead of your moving date with your medication, bed linens, snacks, toiletries, etc. and keep it close by. Take a look at a great printable list here.
3. For same city moves, hire a sitter for children and/or pets
Moving is hard on you, but even harder on children and pets that don’t understand what’s going on and are used to a routine. Don’t count on your little rascals to just go with the flow. Find a sitter and save your sanity!
4. Make your last grocery tip two weeks before moving
Think of your moving day as a vacation. Stocking up on frozen and refrigerated goods right before a move is a headache waiting to happen. Instead, try and stock up on perishable food like soups and pasta.
5. Make use of suitcases, baskets and bins
Boxes aren’t your only option for packing. Put your empty suitcases to work and fill them with your heavy items first, like books and heavy equipment, and stock up on big, reusable bags before your moving date.
6. Get a good night’s sleep before your move
Moving can bring out a rainbow of emotions; sadness, anxiety, fear, excitement, happiness. Still, it’s important to get in some shut eye. Moving requires focus and physical stamina, so make sure to hop into bed early!
7. Use a rubber band on doors for easy entry
Tired of locking and unlocking doors while you’re doing a balancing act with furniture? Rely on a couple rubber bands for hassle free (and hands free) shuffling.

After you get settled into your new place, the last thing you’ll want to do is prepare a meal. Do your research ahead of time and find out what your delivery options are. You can easily check websites like www.justeat.ca and key in your new postal code and even order way ahead of time!
9. Change your address two weeks ahead of time
Make sure to let all your important contacts know that you’re moving. For friends and family, send a cute DIY moving announcement ahead of time for an extra special touch!
